Reading curriculum

Not sure how teachers decide the reading grade on a school report?

The curriculum your school uses to asses your kiddo’s reading will depend on location (which state you live in) & school type (government, Catholic or independent). Ask your class teacher which curriculum they use for assessment if you aren’t sure.

Wondered how your kiddo is assessed for their reading ability?

Your kiddo will be assessed on a wide range of skills, many of which competent readers take for granted & forget about! For example, when picking up a book, you turn it the right way around & open it from left to right - without even noticing anymore! This is one of a million important skills early readers need to specifically learn.

Take a look below for more information once you know which curriculum your child is being assessed against.

reading is just about accuracy, right?

Think again! There are hundreds of building blocks we put together to become a competent reader.

Below is a summary of the types of topics covered in each of the Victorian Curriculum’s three English strands (language, literature & literacy).

  • This largest area covers topics such as phonics (letter & sound awareness), noticing the structure & features of texts, understanding concepts about print (Google this important area), & word classes (nouns, adjectives, & verbs etc.).

  • This area focuses around skills such as recognising different text types (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, narrative, procedure), discussing characters & settings, & retelling the plot/ideas of a text).

  • This area covers skills such as comprehension (literal & inferential), self-correcting after making errors, as well as reading with fluency & correct phrasing.
