FAQ

  • What is Common Reader?

Learning to read is a common experience for all primary school children. Parents can often feel overwhelmed, unsure, or frustrated by the task of daily Home Reader practice with their kiddos. Common Reader® aims to be A Pillar for Parents® to lean on during this time in their child’s education.

  • Who can common reader help?

Any adult who is listening to an early reader! Parents, grandparents & babysitters too, can all benefit from the Common Reader® library of tips & ideas. Kiddo’s can learn plenty from the person they are reading with - a few pointers will get anyone in the right zone to boost a kiddo’s skills.

  • Why do schools use Home Readers?

All primary school children receive direct instruction on learning to read from their classroom teacher. However, research tells us that extra daily practice gives early readers the chance to hone in their newfound skills. Home Readers are especially designed books to help with this practice.

  • Is my kiddo's reading level normal?

Firstly, you should always speak directly with your classroom teacher if you have any concerns. Secondly, the reading level is not fixed nor is it a barrier to improving a range of skills needed to become a confident & competent reader. Need more information?

  • How can I make home readers more interesting?

It might not be clear how to enjoy or maximise these opportunities for Home Reader practice. Common Reader® has a stash of ideas for you depending on wherever you are in the ever-changing journey - let us help!

  • Why is the Home Reader so easy?

You might notice your child is cruising through their Home Reader. This is a good thing! Teachers intentionally set the Home Reader level to be easier than the level that is being worked on in the classroom. Why? Because then kids can focus more on other things; like fluency, expression, comprehension or blissful enjoyment!
